Permanent Lighting in Warren
The first town in the country with electric street lighting
More about lighting in Warren, OH
Warren was founded in 1798 by Ephraim Quinby on 441 acres purchased from the Connecticut Land Company, and named for the town's surveyor, Moses Warren. It sits at 886 feet along the Mahoning River, about 14 miles northwest of Youngstown, with 39,201 residents at the 2020 census and a median age of 39.1. Ohio State Route 82 bypasses the city as a freeway, with access from U.S. Route 422 and State Route 45.
A single local fact outranks everything else on a page about permanent lighting. Warren was the first town in the United States to have electric street illumination, provided by the Packard Electric Company, which was founded here in the 1890s alongside the Packard Motor Car Company.
Whatever else is true about this city, it settled the question of whether fixed outdoor lighting belongs in a streetscape more than a century before anyone was selling it for houses. The residential building that went up while that was happening is still standing.
That building stock is the substrate. Many examples of late nineteenth and early twentieth century architectural styles still stand in Warren, particularly around Courthouse Square and the Trumbull County Courthouse, which contains one of the largest courtrooms in Ohio. Houses of that period were built with deep trim, projecting bays, dormers and porch roofs, which means a front elevation usually has several distinct fascia planes rather than one.
A single straight run across such a house ignores most of what it is. Tracing the planes costs more line and produces something that looks like it was designed for the address.
Deep trim is also forgiving in daylight, which is where a permanent system lives most of its life. A channel color-matched to a painted cornice board on a house of that period is a trim line from the sidewalk. Against unpainted brick or a stone belt course it is visible no matter what color it is, and the reasonable response is to place the run in a horizontal the architecture already has instead of introducing a new one across a detailed face.
River valley siting adds one more consideration. At 886 feet along the Mahoning, Warren sits lower than any other town in this service area.
Damp or diffuse air softens a light line and spreads it wherever it occurs, which flatters plain warm white and muddies tightly spaced multi-color patterns. That is a general argument for simpler programming most of the year and for saving the busy settings for clear nights.
For a city with this much industrial and civic history, the practical value of a fixed system is that it stops treating exterior lighting as a December event. The hardware runs plain warm white across the front of the house for most of the year, carries a single accent color for whatever the calendar asks, and does the full thing for a short stretch in winter. In a town that put electric light on its streets before almost anywhere else, that is a fairly natural way to think about it.

Warren FAQ
Permanent lighting questions in Warren
How much does permanent holiday lighting cost in Warren, OH?
The price depends on roofline length and layout, and Warren had 18,681 housing units at the 2020 census, so each roofline is measured on its own. A complimentary on-site measurement and design comes first, and the exact price comes before anything is ordered.
Do you install Gemstone lights throughout Trumbull County?
Yes. We install and service Gemstone lighting in Warren and across Trumbull County, a roughly square county that also holds Niles, Girard and Hubbard, along with the rest of our Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia region.
Will the track be visible during the day?
Warren still has many late nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings around Courthouse Square. The patented track is color-matched to your trim and tucks into the roofline, so from the sidewalk it is meant to read as part of the house.
How long does the installation take?
Most Warren homes are completed in one to two days, and that includes the track, wiring, controller setup and an app walkthrough before we leave.
