Canfield is old by Ohio standards. The township was laid out in 1798 and took its name in 1800 from Judson Canfield, and the housing stock still shows it. Classic revival is the dominant look on the older streets, and two of the best examples, the Charles Ruggles House and the Judge Eben Newton House, are on the National Register of Historic Places. A facade like that is built around a centre line and a pair of matching wings. It is the easiest kind of house to light well and the easiest to get wrong, because a lamp set slightly off centre reads as a mistake from the road while a matched pair reads as deliberate.

Two centuries of growth also means real trees. Mature oaks and maples over a front lawn open up moonlighting, where fixtures sit up in the canopy and drop dappled light down across the drive instead of flattening the house from ground level. That is the technique that makes an established Canfield lot look like it was always lit that way. The same root systems are the reason a trencher is the wrong tool close to an old trunk, and why the layout has to be worked out on the lawn rather than on paper.

The town sits at about 1,116 feet, high enough that freeze and thaw is a design constraint rather than a footnote. Shallow cable runs and unsealed connectors are what fail on properties like these, and they fail in February when the ground is the last place anyone wants to be.

Two more things shape the work here. The Canfield Fair takes over Labor Day weekend and brings roughly 300,000 people through town, so it is worth planning an install week around rather than into. And with a median age near 47 and a quarter of residents over 65, lighting the steps and the approach to the front door is not decorative on a lot of these properties. It is the part of the system that earns its keep every night of the year.
