Hudson and the Western Reserve
Restraint on a Connecticut plan
More about lighting in Hudson, OH
David Hudson came from Goshen, Connecticut and settled here in 1799, and the town he laid out still looks like the place he left. The Hudson Historic District went onto the National Register on November 28, 1973 and was expanded on October 10, 1989.
Western Reserve Academy's red brick buildings take their cue from Yale, and much of the downtown has deliberately kept two-lane roadways rather than widening them. Hudson incorporated as a village in 1837.
A town that has preserved its character that carefully sets an expectation for anything added to a property, lighting included. Federal and Georgian brick is symmetrical, flat-fronted and quiet, and it does not ask for much. The fixtures that suit it are small, warm and effectively invisible in daylight.
Hardware that announces itself on a nineteenth-century brick front is the fastest way to make a good house look like it is trying. Brick also takes warm light well and cool light badly, and a nineteenth-century red brick front under a high color temperature turns grey.
Hudson runs 25.63 square miles and keeps a lot of that green. Hudson Springs Park carries a 50-acre lake, and Cascade Park, Barlow Farm Park and Colony Park are joined by the Wildlife Woods, Doc's Woods and MacLaren Woods preserves.
Properties adjoining woodland have a permanent black backdrop, and that is the condition in which moonlighting genuinely works, with fixtures set high in a tree and aimed down so the light appears to have no source at all. Twenty-five square miles is a large municipality for a population of 23,110, and the space between houses is much of why the preserves matter to a lighting plan at all.
The city as it exists today only dates to 1994, when the village merged with Hudson Township, which is why one municipality contains both a tight historic core and a great deal of former farmland. A quarter-acre lot on a preserved street and a five-acre parcel on old township ground are not the same job. The giveaway is how far the house sits from the road, and the plans diverge from that measurement onward.
The median age was 44.2 years at the 2020 census across 23,110 residents. Established households more often come to lighting as a second or third project, after the drive, the patio and the planting are already finished. Working within a completed landscape is a different exercise from working on bare ground, because the fixture positions are decided by what is already there rather than chosen freely.
State Routes 303, 91 and 8 carry local traffic and the Ohio Turnpike bisects the city, so the exposure of a given property varies enormously across those 25 square miles. On anything visible from a street inside the historic district, checking the plan against the district's own guidance before installation is worth doing.
A question about what is permitted is far cheaper asked in advance than answered afterwards. The same applies to anything visible from those two-lane downtown roadways, which were kept narrow on purpose and therefore put passing traffic closer to a front garden than a modern road would.

Hudson FAQ
Landscape lighting questions in Hudson
How much does landscape lighting cost in Hudson, OH?
Price follows the property. A quarter-acre lot on a preserved Hudson street and a five-acre parcel on former township ground need very different plans, so we quote after a complimentary on-site consultation and you have the exact price before any work begins.
Do you install landscape lighting throughout Summit County?
Yes. Hudson is one of our Summit County towns along with Akron, and we design, install and service low-voltage LED landscape lighting across the rest of our Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia area too.
How long does a landscape lighting installation take in Hudson, OH?
Hudson became one city in 1994 when the village and the township merged, and it covers about 25.6 square miles of land. In a city that size the scale of each design decides the timeline, from one day to one month. We confirm the schedule after the on-site consultation and before work begins.
Do you service landscape lighting systems in Hudson after installation?
Yes. Hudson systems we install carry our 24-month workmanship warranty, and we keep servicing them after that with bulb replacement, re-aiming, transformer checks and seasonal adjustments as the planting grows in.
