    South Main Street, Poland

A Village Street Where the Houses Came First

Turhand Kirtland founded Poland in 1798, and the village was named for the country in recognition of Polish assistance during the American Revolution. It is small and has stayed small: 1.63 square miles of land, 2,463 residents at the 2020 census, down from 2,866 in 2000, at an elevation of 1,040 feet. The South Main Street Historic District holds the oldest structures in the village. The village sits in Mahoning County and had 2,555 residents at the 2010 census, so the decline has been steady rather than sudden.

A historic village street is a different proposition from a suburban cul-de-sac. Houses sit close to the road, front gardens are shallow, and the distance between a fixture and the facade it lights is measured in feet rather than yards. Short throws call for narrow beams and careful aiming, because a wide flood placed six feet from a wall produces a hot spot in the middle and darkness at both edges.

At 1,507 residents per square mile in a village that size, the sightlines run along the street rather than across open ground. Anything mounted on a front elevation is being viewed at an angle by everyone walking or driving past, not head-on. A fixture aimed to look correct from directly in front of the house will glare from most other positions on the street, and the aiming pass has to be done from the sidewalk in both directions.

Poland Seminary opened as a private academy in 1849 and its building now forms part of Poland Middle School. Nineteenth-century institutional and residential buildings in a village of this age share a vocabulary of tall windows, plain wall planes and strong cornice lines, and the cornice is usually the most rewarding thing to light. A defined line along the top of a wall gives the building an edge against the night sky, which is the single change that makes an older facade look composed rather than merely illuminated. South Main is where the oldest structures are concentrated, which makes that one street the reference point for what looks right in the village.

Poland sits roughly seven miles south of Youngstown, close enough to catch sky glow from the city on a low horizon. Contrast is the scarce resource in that situation. A garden reads as deep only relative to what surrounds it, so the back of a property, screened from the road and from the city side, is frequently where the most striking work is possible on a lot of this size.

The village has lost around four hundred residents since 2000 while keeping the same footprint, so the housing is being handed on rather than added to. Where a lot has had decades of undisturbed planting, the planting decides the layout. Mature shrubs and settled beds are the structure a scheme is built around, and moving light to suit them is a great deal easier than moving them to suit the light. Trees on a narrow village lot are shared visually with the neighbor even when they are not shared legally, and lighting one from below puts light into two gardens at once.
