More about lighting in Upper St. Clair, PA
John Fife settled here in 1762, near what is now the intersection of Washington and McLaughlin Run roads, and the township carries the name of General Arthur St. Clair. It sits about eleven miles south of downtown Pittsburgh in the South Hills, covers 9.83 square miles, and grew ten percent between the 2010 and 2020 censuses, from 19,229 residents to 21,160.
The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 had its roots on this ground. The township covers 9.82 square miles of land with almost no water area.
Around nine percent of the township, roughly 733 acres across fourteen parks and a number of playing fields, is public open space. That much green inside a suburban township means a large number of properties back onto something dark, and a dark boundary is the most valuable thing a garden can own. Depth comes from contrast.
A lit tree twenty feet from the house reads as close, and the same tree reads as distant only when there is unlit ground behind it. Fourteen parks across a township this size also mean a lot of edges, and an edge is where the difference between lighting a garden and lighting the countryside gets decided.
The South Hills name is not decorative. Lots here step, and a driveway often gains or loses a storey between the road and the garage. On sloping ground the position of a fixture matters more than its output, because light behaves differently uphill and downhill.
A source below a wall throws its beam up the face and keeps the lamp out of the eye. The same source above the wall puts glare directly into anyone climbing the drive. Steps between levels are where the accidents happen on a stepped lot, and they come first, before anything decorative is discussed.
McLaughlin Run gives its name to one of the township's main roads and runs through the low ground. Where a property crosses a watercourse like that, the wet corner and the level change usually arrive together, and both are settled on site rather than on paper. Water is also the cheapest optical effect available in a landscape, since a small amount of light near moving water returns far more than the same fixture pointed at a lawn.
The median age was 42.9 years at the 2020 census and the township shares boundaries with six neighboring communities, among them Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Park. Suburbs at that stage hold long-tenure households, so most lighting work happens on properties where the hardscape, planting and drainage are already settled.
The brief is generally to make an existing landscape work at night rather than to invent a new one. It also borders South Fayette, Bridgeville, Scott Township and Peters Township in Washington County, so a lot on any of those edges is being seen by two municipalities at once.
Upper St. Clair adopted a home rule charter in 1973, effective January 5, 1976, so it governs a good deal of what happens on its own ground. Anywhere a local authority holds that much say, whether anything is required before exterior work begins is worth asking up front. It is a cheaper question than a correction.

Upper St. Clair FAQ
Landscape lighting questions in Upper St. Clair
How much does landscape lighting cost in Upper St. Clair, PA?
Cost follows the home and the size of the property, and in Upper St. Clair the level changes matter as much as the acreage, since the steps between levels get lit first. We price it at a complimentary on-site consultation so you have the exact figure before any work begins.
Do you install landscape lighting throughout Allegheny County?
Yes. Upper St. Clair is one of our Allegheny County towns next to Mt. Lebanon, and we design, install and service low-voltage LED landscape lighting there and across the rest of our Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia area.
How long does a landscape lighting installation take in Upper St. Clair, PA?
Upper St. Clair sets aside about 9 percent of its area, roughly 733 acres, for 14 parks and fields, and the township covers 9.8 square miles in the South Hills. Property sizes vary across that much land, so installation takes from one day to one month depending on scale. The schedule is confirmed after the on-site consultation and before work begins.
Do you service landscape lighting systems in Upper St. Clair after installation?
Yes. Upper St. Clair systems we install carry our 24-month workmanship warranty, and service continues after it with transformer checks, bulb replacement, re-aiming and seasonal adjustments.
