Mansion streets and 2,600 acres of woodland
More about lighting in Youngstown, OH
John Young surveyed the site in 1796, settled here in 1797, and the town was officially recorded on August 19, 1802. The city covers 34.564 square miles at 856 feet on the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, held 60,068 residents at the 2020 census and is estimated at 58,832 for 2025.
Its defining feature for anyone working outdoors is Mill Creek Park, roughly 2,600 acres of woodland running five miles along the creek and made a township park in 1891. A small part of the city extends into Trumbull County, and it is the eleventh most populous city in Ohio.
A woodland that size inside a city changes the night. Properties along its edge have an unlit boundary that no subdivision can manufacture, and the opportunity there is depth rather than brightness.
Light the near and middle ground, leave the far edge alone, and the garden appears to continue into the trees. Lighting the boundary itself does the reverse and stops the eye dead at the fence line.
The Wick Park and Arlington Avenue historic districts hold early twentieth-century mansions built during the industrial years. Houses from that period are large, deep and heavily articulated, with porticos, dormers, chimneys and secondary wings, and the common error is lighting them as though they were the size of a modern house.
Big elevations need fewer sources set further out with wider beams, or the front reads as a row of bright patches with dark gaps in between. Wick Park gives those streets an open center, which is a rare thing to be able to light a house against.
Where mature trees survive on those streets they are the best lighting instrument on the property. Downlighting from high in an old crown produces a pattern of shadow on the ground that no fixture at grade reproduces, and it lights a driveway without a single visible source at eye level. It also needs a plan for reaching the fixture again on a landscape lighting maintenance visit, since the tree keeps growing long after the installation is finished.
The population has fallen nearly 65 percent since 1960, and a city that empties unevenly ends up with occupied houses beside dark ground. On a street like that, lighting is doing more than decorating.
Even, continuous light along the frontage and the approach makes a property read as occupied and cared for from a distance, and uniformity achieves that where brightness does not. Interstate 680 and the Madison Avenue Expressway cut through the same fabric, leaving pockets of housing with a highway edge on one side and parkland on the other.
The Mahoning runs through the city and the median age was 38.5 years at the 2020 census. Across 34.5 square miles the housing ranges from those mansion districts to compact working streets laid out at the same time, and no single approach fits all of it.
The one constant is that the older the house, the more it rewards light that finds detail over light that simply covers area. Mill Creek Park has been public since 1891, so the trees along its edge have had well over a century to reach their present size.

Youngstown FAQ
Landscape lighting questions in Youngstown
How much does landscape lighting cost in Youngstown, OH?
It depends on the house and the property. A large Wick Park or Arlington Avenue home needs fewer fixtures set further out than most people expect, while a compact Youngstown street lot is a smaller plan, and we price both at a complimentary on-site consultation before any work begins.
Do you install landscape lighting throughout Mahoning County?
Yes. We design, install and service low-voltage LED landscape lighting in Youngstown and across Mahoning County, which is also where our Canfield base is, and in the rest of our Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia area.
How long does a landscape lighting installation take in Youngstown, OH?
Youngstown has the Crandall Park-Fifth Avenue Historic District, where mansions of industrial executives still stand, and snowfall averages 67.8 inches a season. A grand older property and a small city lot do not need the same amount of lighting, so installation runs from one day to one month depending on scale. We confirm the schedule after the on-site consultation and before work begins.
Do you service landscape lighting systems in Youngstown after installation?
Yes. Youngstown systems we install carry our 24-month workmanship warranty and ongoing service: bulb replacement, re-aiming, transformer checks and seasonal adjustments. Fixtures high in old trees near Mill Creek Park need re-aiming as the trees keep growing.
