Two revivals, two very different rooflines

More about lighting in Boardman, OH

Boardman was founded in the late 1790s by Elijah Boardman, a land agent of the Connecticut Land Company, and formally established in 1806. The township had 40,213 residents at the 2020 census and sits at 1,056 feet. St. James Episcopal Church is the oldest structure in the township.

What matters for anything mounted along a roof is that Boardman is not one housing era. It is several, laid down over more than two centuries, and the right approach on one street is the wrong one two streets over.

The clearest evidence sits in the township's own historic districts. Newport Village Historic District is noted for Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival architecture, and those two styles want opposite treatments. Colonial Revival is symmetrical and its cornice tends to run level and long, which is close to ideal for an uninterrupted horizontal line.

Tudor Revival is the opposite proposition: steep cross gables, a roofline that changes direction repeatedly, and a front elevation whose interest comes from asymmetry. A single continuous run across a Tudor front flattens exactly the geometry the house was designed around. Following the gables costs more line and reads far better.

Forest Glen Estates Historic District and the Mill Creek Park Historic District add a third condition, which is landscape. Boardman abuts Mill Creek Park, one of the Youngstown area's most popular attractions, with an eleven-acre rose garden, several small waterfalls, a lily pond, marshland and Lanterman's Mill.

Wherever a property carries established canopy over its front lawn, that canopy intercepts the sightline from the road to the fascia. A roof line nobody can see from the sidewalk in July is still a roof line nobody can see in December.

Boardman is also a commercial township as much as a residential one, with U.S. Route 224, State Route 7 and Interstate 680 running through it. Along those corridors there is a lot of competing light at night.

A residential system half a block off a lit arterial does not need to be brighter to be seen; it needs to be cleaner. A single crisp line at a consistent height reads immediately against background glare, while a busy multi-color pattern at the same brightness tends to blur into it.

The daytime question is where a permanent track earns or loses its keep. Colonial Revival trim is usually painted and usually a plain flat board, which is the best case there is for a color-matched channel.

Tudor Revival fronts often bring half-timbering, stucco and masonry into the same elevation, so there is rarely one trim color to match. On those houses the honest approach is to accept that the channel will be visible somewhere and to put it where the roof already draws a line, rather than where it is easiest to reach.

Anyone comparing a fixed system to an annual install in Boardman should weigh how many separate roof planes their front elevation actually has. On a symmetrical Colonial the two options look similar on paper. On a Tudor with three gables and a bay, the annual version means re-solving the same puzzle every November, and the fixed version means solving it once.

    Boardman FAQ

    Permanent lighting questions in Boardman

How much does permanent holiday lighting cost in Boardman, OH?

Pricing depends on your roofline length and layout. Boardman's suburban growth began around 1950, and the township also has historic districts such as Forest Glen Estates, so each roofline is measured on its own. Every project starts with a complimentary on-site measurement and design, so you get an exact price before anything is ordered.

Do you install Gemstone lights throughout Mahoning County?

Yes. We install and service Gemstone permanent holiday lighting in Boardman and across the rest of Mahoning County. That service also reaches the other Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia towns we cover.

Will the track be visible during the day?

The patented Gemstone track is color-matched to your fascia and tucks into the roofline, so a Boardman house keeps its look from the street during the day.

How long does the installation take?

Most Boardman homes are completed in one to two days. Track, wiring, controller setup and an app walkthrough all happen before we leave.
