Permanent Lighting in Wheeling
A city that has run a six-mile light display since 1985
More about lighting in Wheeling, WV
Wheeling was settled in 1769 by Ebenezer Zane. One credible explanation of the name traces it to the Lenni-Lenape wih link or wee lunk, meaning place of the head or place of the skull.
The city had 27,052 residents at the 2020 census against a peak of 61,659 at the 1930 census, and its elevation runs from 686 to 1,299 feet across the Ohio River valley and the hills above it. Interstate 70 and its spur Interstate 470 run east to west through the city.
No town in this service area has a more established relationship with outdoor lighting. Oglebay Park, 1,650 acres deeded to the city by Earl W. Oglebay in 1926 and open to the public since 1928, has run its Winter Festival of Lights since 1985. The first year covered 125 acres over a three-mile drive.
It now covers more than 300 acres over a six-mile drive, with displays including the Snowflake Tunnel and a Polyhedron Star carrying over 2,000 lights. In 2008 the park announced it would move new displays to LED rather than incandescent, using 85 percent less energy and lasting five times longer. That is the same technology shift a fixed residential system depends on, made publicly, in this city, seventeen years ago.
Wheeling Island has a number of historic homes with Victorian architecture, and its historic district is mostly two-story frame houses from the mid-19th to early 20th century in Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. The city's listed fabric also includes the Chapline Street Row Historic District, the North Wheeling Historic District, Centre Market with its 1853 and 1890 buildings, Shepherd Hall from 1798 and the Wheeling Suspension Bridge completed in 1849. A Queen Anne or Italianate front often carries bays, dormers and porch roofs, each with its own fascia.
For a track system that is an opportunity rather than a problem, because the house supplies the geometry and the line only has to follow it. It also means a single straight run across the front is close to the worst thing available.
The elevation range does something specific here that flat cities do not. With more than six hundred feet between the city's low ground and its high ground, houses on the hillsides are seen from the valley and from the bridges, often at a distance and from below.
At that range the eye reads the outline of a roof and nothing finer, so the run along the highest continuous eave is what carries. Detail traced on a lower porch roof will not survive the viewing distance.
Daylight is where Victorian trim helps. Deep bracketed cornices, wide frieze boards and heavy verge boards all give a channel somewhere to sit outside the eye, which is exactly what hardware that stays mounted all year needs.
Against painted trim a color match reads as a trim line. Against the cut stone and unpainted brick common in the older districts it will be visible, and choosing the placement deliberately beats pretending otherwise.
Something worth confirming for a specific Wheeling address. Several of the city's residential neighborhoods sit inside listed historic districts, and whether any review applies to fixtures on a front elevation is a question about that particular property. It is a short call, and it is a much shorter call before an order than after one.

Wheeling FAQ
Permanent lighting questions in Wheeling
How much does permanent holiday lighting cost in Wheeling, WV?
The price depends on roofline length and layout, and Wheeling has historic districts such as North Wheeling and Chapline Street Row. A complimentary on-site measurement and design comes first, so you know the exact price before anything is ordered.
Do you install Gemstone lights throughout Ohio County?
Yes. We install and service Gemstone lighting in Wheeling and across Ohio County, a 109-square-mile county on the Ohio River that is the third smallest in West Virginia, plus the rest of our Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia region.
Will the track be visible during the day?
Wheeling Island is where prosperous residents built fine houses as the city grew. The patented track is color-matched to your trim and tucks into the roofline, so it reads as part of the roof edge.
How long does the installation take?
Most Wheeling homes are completed in one to two days. The track, wiring, controller setup and app walkthrough are finished before we leave.
