More about lighting in Bridgeport, WV

Bridgeport was first settled between 1771 and 1774 and takes its name from a bridge across Simpson Creek. It was chartered in 1816 and had 9,336 residents at the 2020 census, sitting at 1,020 feet in Harrison County.

The median age is 43.6 years. It is an old town with a young building stock layered on top of it, and both layers turn up on the same drive through it.

The older layer is the one that dictates hardware. The Governor Joseph Johnson House was built in 1818 and remodeled around 1840 in the Italianate style, which is the single most instructive thing on this page for anyone thinking about a fascia-mounted system. Italianate means deep eaves carried on brackets, with an overhang that projects well beyond the wall.

That overhang decides everything. A light line set on the outer fascia of a deep bracketed cornice throws further from the building and casts the brackets into relief, which is usually the effect people want.

A line tucked behind the overhang lights the soffit and disappears from the street. The difference is a few inches of placement and it is visible from two hundred feet away.

The town's other listed structures make the same point about scale. The Simpson Creek Covered Bridge dates to 1881 and the Bridgeport Lamp Chimney Company Bowstring Concrete Arch Bridge to 1924.

Nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century structures in this part of West Virginia were built with generous projections and heavy trim, and heavy trim is forgiving. There is somewhere for a channel to sit where the eye does not go, which is exactly what a system that stays up all year needs.

Newer Bridgeport is a different substrate entirely. The city has grown around Interstate 79 and U.S. Route 50, with Bridgeport City Park, Deegan and Hinkle Lakes Park and Compton Park, and The Bridge Sports Complex opening in 2021. Houses built in that period of growth tend to carry straight aluminum fascia, uniform trim colors and shallow uncomplicated overhangs.

That is the easiest possible substrate for a color-matched track and the hardest one to fake on. There is no ornament to hide an uneven run behind, so the line is either level or it is not.

Programming is worth thinking about beyond December in a town with this much civic activity. Pete Dye Golf Club sits here, ranked 92nd among America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses in the 2025-26 Golf Digest rankings, and the parks and the sports complex keep a calendar running year round. A fixed system that spends most of the year on warm white and switches to two colors for a weekend is doing something a strand of seasonal lights physically cannot do, because the seasonal version is in a box in the garage by the second week of January.

Before anything is ordered, it is worth confirming one thing about a specific address: which of the two Bridgeports a house actually belongs to. The answer is usually obvious from the front elevation, and it changes the specification more than the square footage does.
