Christmas Lighting in Canton
Steep roofs, brick streets, and a January that cannot decide
More about lighting in Canton, OH
Canton's most demanding streets for a holiday display are in the Ridgewood Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 19, 1982. The district is made up of architect designed Revival buildings in the Tudor, Georgian and French-Norman styles, built in the early twentieth century, with original brick streets and locally produced street lighting standards still in place.
Tudor and French-Norman elevations typically bring steep pitches, multiple intersecting gables, dormers cut into the roof plane, tall chimneys and half timbering that already draws a strong pattern across the facade. A continuous run of light around every edge fights that pattern instead of supporting it. The stronger approach on a house like this is to state the dominant roofline and the entry, and to leave the secondary gables dark so the primary shape reads clearly from across the street.
The district's original brick streets and locally produced street lighting standards are still in place, so a display there sits beside historic street fixtures. Color temperature is a site decision on streets like these, and it is worth walking the block after dark before choosing.
Canton's January is the other design constraint, and it is unusual for how indecisive it is. Average January highs run about 34 degrees with average lows about 19, but during a typical January a high over 50 degrees is just as common as a low below zero.
The all time record low for the Akron-Canton area is minus 25 degrees, set on January 19, 1994, and the airport averages 47.7 inches of snow a season. Repeated melt and refreeze is exactly the cycle that works fixings loose, because water gets into a joint at 50 degrees and expands in it overnight.
That single fact should shape how a Canton display is attached. Anything relying purely on friction or on adhesion to a cold surface is being asked to survive dozens of expansion cycles between late November and takedown.
Mechanical fixings sized to the actual gutter or fascia profile survive that. Improvised ones usually do not, and the failure tends to happen in the first week of January when the weather is at its least forgiving and a ladder is at its least welcome.
Canton's Light Up Downtown and Christmas tree lighting, held with the Canton Chamber of Commerce, took place on December 12 in 2024.
Canton was founded in 1805 along Nimishillen Creek, when the surveyor Bezaleel Wells recorded the plat. It became the Stark County seat in 1809 and a city in 1838. Many railroad lines made it a center of heavy industry, and the Timken roller bearing company moved here in 1901 as the automobile industry overtook carriage making.
Canton's street layout is the basis for addresses across Stark County. Tuscarawas Street divides north from south and Market Avenue divides east from west. The Upper Downtown Canton Historic District, listed in 2006, runs along Market Avenue between Sixth Street North and Second Street South, and the Palace Theater at 605 Market Avenue North has been on the National Register since 1979.
The William McKinley Tomb on Seventh Street Northwest is a National Historic Landmark, and the McKinley National Memorial was dedicated in 1907. The First Ladies National Historic Site, at 205 and 331 South Market Avenue, includes the Saxton House. St. John's Catholic Church, at Sixth Street and McKinley Avenue Northwest, was named a minor basilica in 2012.

Call us and we come back out. Canton gets lighter snow than the snow belt to the north, but a dark section after a hard freeze is still worth a call. Maintenance through the season is part of the job, not an extra, and it sits alongside installation, removal and storage under Complete Care.
Springs around Canton are short and switch fast from hard winter to summer weather, and removal here starts after January 1st and runs into February, weather depending. We take down the lights and decor and store your set until the next season.
