The most common worry about permanent roofline lighting is that it will look like Christmas lights in July. A good install answers that worry before it starts, because the whole point is a track you cannot really see by day and can transform at night. Here is how it goes on.
It starts with a demo, not a ladder
Before anything is fixed to the house, Luke lights it in the evening so you can see the effect on your own roofline. That is where the plan comes from, and it means you are agreeing to something you have actually seen.
Mapping the roofline
The run is planned to follow the eaves and gables tightly, tucked into the shadow line so the channel sits where the roof already casts shade. Done right, the track reads as part of the trim by day rather than a strip of lights stuck to the house.
The install itself
A channel of individually addressable LED bulbs is fitted under the roofline, then wired to a transformer and a controller. It is usually a day of work, depending on how much roofline the house has and how the eaves are shaped. The bulbs face down and sit inside the track, which is what keeps the daytime look clean.
A permanent system is judged twice: once lit at night, and once switched off in daylight. Both have to look right.
The handover
Before the crew leaves, the app is set up with you and a few scenes are saved: warm white for a normal evening, a holiday palette, off. From then on you control colour and brightness per bulb from your phone, with no ladder involved ever again.
It starts with an evening demo
A permanent install does not begin on a ladder. It begins after dark, with Luke lighting the roofline while you watch, so you can see warm white and then colour on your own house before anything is fitted. This is where the design gets settled: which runs to light, how far to carry them along the gables and peaks, and how the track should sit so it disappears by day.
Judging it on the real house matters, because a roofline that looks simple from the street often has returns, dormers and height changes that only show up once the light is on it.
Measuring and mapping the roofline
Once the design is agreed, the roofline is measured and mapped run by run. Every eave, gable and peak that will carry light is planned so the track follows a clean line and the corners are handled properly, since a corner is where a sloppy install shows first. The map also settles where the power will come from and how the runs connect back to it.
Matching the track to the house
The channel that holds the bulbs is matched to the fascia or trim colour so it reads as part of the house rather than a strip stuck to it. Done well, the track is close to invisible in daylight, tucked under the eave and facing down. This is one of the details that separates a permanent system that looks built-in from one that looks added on.
Mounting, wiring and the controller
The track is fixed under the eave along the mapped runs, the bulbs seated, and the whole system wired back to a transformer and a controller. The transformer steps the current down to what the LEDs run on, and the controller is what makes every bulb individually addressable, so the same track can show warm white most nights and full colour on a holiday.
The wiring is planned to stay out of sight and to carry power cleanly to the far end of the longest run, so the light is even from the first bulb to the last.
Commissioning the app and handover
With the system in and powered, it is commissioned and set up on the app with you, so you leave knowing how to set scenes, schedules and colours rather than working it out from a manual. Warm white can be scheduled to come on at dusk on its own, with colour saved for the holidays or a game night.
